N2 Gateway Housing
The N2 Gateway Housing project was a project aimed at improving the image of South Africa to the world. The N2 is one of the main roadways in South Africa that many tourists would be travelling on, and before the project, many of South Africa's slums were on the side of the N2. To combat the issue, the government spent hundreds of millions of dollars relocating people and replacing slums with new housing communities.
Gautrain
In 2000, the South African government approved a proposal for a new high-speed rail system. Because of the World Cup, they decided to fast-track the Gautrain for completion. The whole process was very expensive but ultimately led to a better World Cup experience for many of the richer tourists who avoided long car rides as a result.
