Current Issues

Stadiums: After being put to good use during the World Cup, many of the ten stadiums have now gone to waste. Keeping them in simple working condition is putting an economic strain on the citizens of South Africa. Even with a little bit of money being put into them, the stadiums are simply falling apart due to basic wear and tear. Some smaller soccer and rugby teams are using the facilities, but they only get about a thousand fans in a stadium with a capacity of over 55,000

Gautrain: The wonderful project that was the Gautrain doesn't seem to be worth the cost. For most South Africans, the cost to ride the Gautrain is simply too much, and they use alternative modes of transportation instead.

National Pride: Regardless of cost, one big reason for hosting the World Cup was to reinvigorate some nationalism. While in the moment the World Cup did just that, in the years after, the nationalism has died down and many South Africans are left wondering why they spent so much money on hosting a soccer tournament instead of their own citizens in need.
