Building the Stadiums

Total cost: $1 Billion
Workers required: 75,000
Number of new stadiums built: 5
Number of old stadiums refurbished: 5
South Africa needed about 10 stadiums to host the World Cup, the same number of stadiums that many previous hosts had. For the most part, the building was smooth and stayed on track, except for one pretty big hiccup which was a workers strike.
Unhappy with their $1.75 per hour wages, 50,000 workers went on strike, demanding $2.00 per hour. Ultimately a compromise was reached between the union and the workers for a 10% increase in pay
